Redesigning the onboarding experience and enabling the HR function to be a corporate change agent

A co-design journey for onboarding to improve the experience for every stakeholder involved and active training in design skills for HR

In the HR Design Lab project, we involved HR specialists and managers, area managers, and Sidel directors from various countries in redesigning a better integration experience for both new hires and hiring managers. Thanks to the project, the HR team acquired Design Thinking skills for managing corporate transformation processes.

Enhancing HR skills to improve the Employee Experience

Sidel wanted to expand the skills of its international HR team and enable them to be change agents within the company for the continuous improvement of internal HR processes, starting with the redesign of onboarding to standardize it globally.

Initial Challenge: Enhancing HR skills to improve the Employee Experience

Strategy

Involving the HR team in the redesign of people-centered onboarding

The project team consisted of Sidel HR figures representing different countries and was supported by area managers and directors at crucial moments of the project. The journey was structured into several stages and tasks carried out directly by the HR team under the training and guidance of Amploom consultants, with the aim of redesigning onboarding based on the insights of those who experience it firsthand.

Result

New onboarding experience supports and a design method for change management

The project team designed an improved onboarding experience for both new hires and the managers responsible for integrating new resources into their areas. New tools were created and guidelines defined to implement the revised onboarding. Furthermore, the skills acquired by the project team during the HR Design Lab journey were applied again in the review of additional internal processes.

Initial Challenge: Enhancing HR skills to improve the Employee Experience

Sidel is a global provider of packaging solutions for beverage, food, home, and personal care products in PET, can, glass, and other materials. The company was interested in expanding and evolving the skills of its HR collaborators to increase their potential as key figures for the transformation of the corporate Employee Experience; essentially, to be change agents.
It was also important to establish greater collaboration dynamics among geographically distant HR colleagues. Furthermore, Sidel intended to redesign its onboarding experience to standardize it on a global level.

Strategy: Involving the HR team in the redesign of people-centered onboarding

We designed a co-design journey and in-depth study of tools from Design Thinking, titled HR Design Lab. The redesign of Onboarding served as a real-world case for applying the design methodology. The international project team was composed of HR figures and supported by area managers and directors at crucial moments of the project.

The 11-session journey included:

  1. Analysis of the onboarding process already in place, also using the lens of consistency with Sidel’s organizational culture;
  2. Qualitative interviews with new hires, managers responsible for integration, and Onboarding buddies, conducted by Amploom consultants alongside the project team to gather the perspective of those who experience onboarding firsthand;
  3. User profiling and definition of intervention areas based on information emerging from the interviews;
  4. Creative generation of innovative solutions and design of the new Onboarding experience;
  5. Planning of necessary actions: defining who is responsible for creating the tools needed for the new Onboarding and who to involve in its delivery.

Each session began with a theoretical deep dive into Design Thinking methodology and the application of its tools, before moving on to practice.

The results emerging from the HR Design Lab project are:

  • evidence of the value brought by the involvement and collaboration of multidisciplinary figures, including HR and business experts and perspectives from different contexts. The active participation of 6 HR figures and 6 business figures enriched the discussion and the design of solutions for the Employee Experience;
  • the goal of improving the Onboarding experience for both new hires and responsible managers resulted in 8 new supports, including tools and procedures, to be implemented in the revised Onboarding;
  • the journey as a whole provided Sidel, and particularly its HR team, with a design method for change management—a set of tools and design activities that have already been readopted for another Employee Experience project.

Following the project, the digitalization of Sidel’s new Onboarding process is currently underway.
